Moving out is stressful enough without a cleaning checklist. But a thorough clean before handing back keys matters practically: it’s often required for a deposit refund from landlords, and it determines what you’re leaving behind for the next occupants. Even if you’re an owner moving out, a clean property shows better and can affect sale price or handover impressions.
This is a complete deep clean checklist for moving out, organised by room, with the tasks most people miss highlighted specifically.
Before You Start
Clean after all furniture and boxes have been removed — it’s much easier to clean empty rooms. Bring your own cleaning supplies; don’t rely on what’s already in the property. You’ll need: all-purpose cleaner, glass cleaner, baking soda, white vinegar, bin bags, microfiber cloths, a mop, a vacuum with crevice tool, oven cleaner (or baking soda paste), and a step ladder for high surfaces.
If you have a move-in inventory or property inspection report, use it to confirm which items were already damaged before you moved in.
Kitchen
Oven and hob
The most scrutinised item in any tenancy checkout. Clean thoroughly — all surfaces including the door glass, inside walls, under the hob, and the extractor filter. Use oven cleaner or baking soda paste for baked-on grease (see the stovetop cleaning guide for method). The oven should look close to how it was when you moved in.
- Remove and clean grates and burner caps (gas hob)
- Clean oven racks separately — soak in hot soapy water for 30 minutes
- Clean inside oven door and the glass panel
- Degrease extractor hood and clean or replace extractor filter
Refrigerator and freezer
- Defrost the freezer completely (leave it running with the door open, or use a hairdryer carefully)
- Remove all drawers and shelves and wash separately
- Wipe down all interior surfaces including the seal/gasket
- Clean the exterior including the top (often forgotten)
Cabinets and drawers
- Wipe inside all cupboards — top, sides, and base
- Clean all door handles and drawer pulls
- Wipe down exterior cabinet faces and the inside of cabinet doors
Sink and worktops
- Descale the sink, taps, and around the drain with white vinegar
- Clean under the sink and remove any items left behind
- Clean behind the tap area (limescale collects here)
Bathroom
Toilet
- Clean the bowl inside with a brush and toilet cleaner
- Wipe the exterior including the base where it meets the floor (frequently missed)
- Clean the flush handle, lid, seat (both sides), and the hinge area
- Clean behind the toilet
Bath and shower
- Descale the showerhead (vinegar soak)
- Clean shower screen or curtain — remove limescale with vinegar
- Scrub grout and caulk — address mould with a mould-specific spray
- Clean taps and shower controls — remove limescale buildup
- Clean the bath or shower tray — remove any discolouration
Sink and vanity
- Descale taps and sink basin
- Wipe inside medicine cabinet or vanity drawers
- Clean the mirror
Exhaust fan
Remove the fan cover and vacuum dust from the blades. A blocked fan in a bathroom is a common landlord deduction.
Bedrooms and Living Areas
Floors
- Vacuum all carpets thoroughly, including edges and in corners
- Move to corners the furniture has left — vacuum under where large items stood
- Mop hard floors after vacuuming
- Clean under radiators (dust accumulates heavily here)
Walls and surfaces
- Wipe down windowsills inside and out (within reach)
- Clean light switches and socket plates — they’re grimy and always checked
- Wipe scuff marks from walls with a damp cloth (Mr Clean Magic Eraser for stubborn marks)
- Clean skirting boards along their full length
Doors and fittings
- Wipe door handles on both sides
- Clean the top of door frames (heavily dusty and frequently checked)
- Clean inside wardrobes and closets — wipe shelves and rails
Windows
- Clean interior glass — vinegar and water solution, microfiber cloth
- Wipe window frames and tracks (tracks collect significant grime)
- Clean exterior windows if accessible from inside or from ground level
Commonly Missed Areas
These are the areas most frequently flagged in checkout reports:
- Top of kitchen wall units — accumulates greasy dust rapidly in cooking environments
- Behind appliances — behind the washing machine, dishwasher, and fridge
- Light fittings and ceiling fans — clean the fittings and any accessible bulbs
- Inside the dishwasher — check the filter, spray arms, and door seal
- Washing machine drum and seal — remove residue from the rubber door seal
- Curtain tracks and rails — wipe with a damp cloth
- The gap between the oven and counter — use a butter knife wrapped in a cloth
Garden and Exterior (if applicable)
- Mow lawn and tidy garden to the state described in your tenancy agreement
- Clear any items left in the garden or shed
- Sweep paths and patio
- Clean the front door exterior
Final Check Before Handing Back Keys
- Walk through every room and check each item on this list
- Photograph everything — every room, every cleaned area, timestamp on the photos
- Return all keys, fobs, and remote controls
- Note any pre-existing damage and ensure it’s documented from your move-in inventory
Final Thoughts
A complete move-out clean takes a full day for most properties. Budget accordingly and don’t leave it for the final morning. The areas that fail checkout inspections most often are the oven, bathroom grout and limescale, tops of units, and behind appliances — address these thoroughly and the rest is straightforward.
